About
Prima Bakeries has been at the heart of Cornish baking since 1978. Originally established by the Buist family as a pizza base manufacturer, the business quickly evolved into the fully fledged craft bakery it is today. Ross, the third generation of the Buist family to bake at Prima, ensures that all our products are made to the very highest quality and flavour each day.
Prima’s bakery production site is adjacent to the A30 at Scorrier near Redruth in the heart of the County, and we are incredibly proud of our heritage as a Cornish bakery. Our recipes for traditional local delicacies such as our Saffron Buns or Hevva Cake have been passed down from father to son, and we constantly strive for the ultimate experience in taste and freshness. We pride ourselves on creating authentic handmade products for our local community through our on-site shop, and the whole of Cornwall through our wholesale service.
We are the only County-wide wholesale baker and pasty maker, serving over 500 customers the length and breadth of Cornwall. You will find our bakery goods sold in convenience stores and independent retail outlets as well as being served in pubs, hotels, cafes, and restaurants throughout the Duchy.
We are proud to be an Employee-Owned Business…
At the beginning of 2024, we were delighted to announce our transition into an employee-owned business!
The Prima Bakeries Group, incorporating both Prima Bakeries and Cornish Premier Pasties, are transitioning into an employee-owned business. As a group, we are currently the fourth-largest producer of Cornish Pasties in the world and the largest locally owned producer in Cornwall. The new Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) forms a legal structure encompassing over 150 employees. The transfer of ownership of the group secures the future of the business and forms part of a long-term succession plan led by our Managing Director, Mark Norton.
“The transition of the group to become employee-owned is part of a long-term succession plan. We have always been proud of being a family-owned and run Cornish business and this feels a great way of extending the “family” to include all our staff. The move reinforces our commitment to our employees and customers, and allows our staff to share in the company’s success and actively participate in its future direction. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built at both Prima Bakeries and Cornish Premier Pasties and look forward to working alongside our dedicated team to strive for continued growth. I know the group will continue to flourish and I’m excited for the next chapter!”
